Students are able to communicate effectively in Spanish in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational, and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Advanced Low level of language proficiency, according to ACTFL Guidelines
1.1 Speaking ability: The student is able to satisfy the requirements of everyday situations and routine school and work requirements. Can communicate facts and talk casually about topics of current public and personal interest, using general vocabulary. The student can be understood without difficulty by native speakers.
1.2 Listening ability: The student is able to understand main ideas and most details of connected discourse on a variety of topics beyond the immediacy of the situation. Comprehension may be uneven due to a variety of linguistic factors and topics.
1.3 Reading ability: The student is able to read prose selections of several paragraphs in length, particularly if printed clearly and if prose is in familiar sentence patterns. Reader understands the main ideas and facts but may miss some details. At this level the student can read such texts as descriptions, narratives, short stories, news items, and routine personal and business correspondence.
1.4 Writing ability: The student is able to write routine social correspondence and join sentences in simple discourse of at least several paragraphs in length on familiar topics, and is able to express him/herself simply with some circumlocution. Good control of the most frequently used syntactic structures, but makes frequent errors in producing complex sentences. Writing is understandable to natives not used to the writing of non-natives.

Reflective Narrative:
To fulfill this MLO, a student should be able to speak in Spanish regarding a variety of topics, usually in well-formulated sentences, and be able to write and complete their Spanish-language assignments with little to no issues. Also to keep up with the conversation, understand each topic that is spoken, recognize the language being spoken and comprehend it won’t always flow smoothly. To be able to understand written material upon reading it, already accustomed to the language and its written structure. Comprehend the pattern of the work they are reading at first glance. Sentence structures should be concise and use the utmost of their language repertoire to its maximum potential.
The courses which I have taken to support the completion of Major Learning Outcome 1 are SPAN 301 - Composition and Oral Practice, and SPAN 306 - Culture and Civilization of Spanish Latin America. For SPAN 301 I chose to present over “Artistas y Actores que hacen un diferencia” which I took part in with several other students, in which we spoke about the three actors who wish to make a difference. We gave a brief history of who they were and what they contributed to positively impact society. This course also allowed me to be able to identify errors I made in statements as well as the best replacement for certain words in order to make the sentence structure clever. This course also helped me learn how to communicate my thoughts aloud concisely and in a professional manner. The second course that was key in my successful engagement with this outcome was SPAN 306, where I chose to orally present with my group about “Cuba'', specifically considering the formation of Cuba, who colonized it, major events that took place, and the influence Africans have had over the country to the rest of our class. This was just one of the countries we went over and had discussions about and converse many times throughout the semester. SPAN 306 was a review of Spanish Latin American history through viewing events that occurred from Christoper Columbus landing in the Americas and how his actions led to how modern day Latin America was formed. In the course, for every certain amount of chapters we would discuss what occurred, announce our views of the situation and hold discussions in groups. We engaged in discussions in order to improve upon our understanding of what we just read.
Challenges that may arise as I continue to develop in this area are the lack of conversation with other groups of people who have read similar subjects when I am no longer able to attend the University or a High level education institution. What I will do on my own time is read aloud other Spanish written texts in order to make sure my speaking skills are up to date.
