Reflective Narrative:
SPAN 301S helps contribute to the fulfillment of MLO 5. Throughout this course we undergo a series of activities that may need a Spanish speaking individual, a better understanding of speaking with different people while we may speak similar to one another our way of life creates a gap between individuals. So we tried to understand how we could overcome these issues and understand one another better. We also get the opportunity to talk with multiple individuals with different backgrounds. Understanding who these people are and how living in America has influenced their lives is an important part of this course. The most important learning experience in this course was our service-learning experience. In which we chose to go to a volunteering group and help our community. We also reflected on what we did with our service learning groups, more about how our actions affect us personally rather than what we did to help out in general. I understand that the people of the community I worked in want change to come to their communities. To see how our efforts in restoring native habitats brings communities closer together, and lead them in the right direction when it comes to keeping our surrounding clean and healthy. In noting my own lack of interpreting skills I wish to develop further in translating English to Spanish. I noticed that I am severely lacking in the following areas: vocabulary, translation, and speaking. I find that little by little more Spanish words I don’t know pop up, I still lack practice in being able to accurately act like a translator, and I get very anxious talking in large groups. SPAN 301S covers similar topics that are taught in SPAN 301, 304, 306, and 308. In which we begin to gain a better understanding of the Spanish language. To go further beyond my learning experience, I need to read up more on the Spanish vocabulary and to go to certain areas where Spanish is more profusely used than English.
