Reflective Narrative:
SPAN 310 takes into account different types of books and their contents depending on the age range children and teenagers will read at various points of their youth; Taught by Dr. Carolyn Gonzalez which helps cover MLO 3. Roughly every 4 to 5 weeks we cover a certain age range for children in regards to what they typically read during their educational paths. We first go over kindergarten through third grade children's books. Then move on to Middle Grade Book, then finally middle school through young adult level literature. It is a noticeable difference jumping from one range of books to the other. At the beginning there are a lot less words, and a greater number of images pertaining to what the book is about. As the child grows their experiences change, just like the books they tread, becoming filled with more words and less images. Usually the couture books have random topics, or some form of teaching in order to get that child to understand what they are reading and increase their reading capabilities. Books for Middle Grade start to have a specific message that the author wants their readers to learn the importance of certain people or objects. Young Adult level books usually have a larger quantity of words, and do not specifically have to stay on topic. Many books on this level are fictional stories that continue on into their own series. The course helps understand what exactly these are more important than just simple visuals with nice artwork. There are books that try to make children have a clear thought process over certain themes and how this can help them grow as a person. We have reviewed a number of authors of the books read throughout the semester and their reasons as to why they wrote this specific piece of literature. They try to show that children have a bigger impact on the lives of those around them, that they all have unique points of view and that if they try, their words can change the world they live in.
