SPAN 306 - Culture and Civilization of Spanish Latin America
Course Description - This course presents a historical and cultural overview of Hispanic Latin America from its pre-Columbian origins to the present through works of literature, art, music, and video clips. Taught in Spanish.
Reflective Narrative:
This course taught by Dr. Christine Fernandez helped fulfill the requirement of MLO 1, through understanding how Latin America was formed. We began our course by discussing the beginning of the Conquest, when Christopher Columbus interacted with the indigenous people of the Americas, and how his actions led to what today has become modern Latin America. Most of the work that needed to be accomplished in this course revolved around the history of all Latin American countries, due to the fact that this course covered a large array of countries and thus we rarely stuck with just one. As such, we reviewed details regarding how different countries were formed and their impact on history. As the title entails, we went over culture and civilization, which contained many written, drawn, and spoken works. As many know, music and literature are a big part of Latin culture, giving me further insight on what language signifies. The areas that were covered in this course in which I wish to develop further that would best suit me would be literature and music. As someone who wishes to become a translator someday, improving my speaking skills, and understanding of Latin culture will help me greatly in the future. SPAN 306 goes hand in hand with my SPAN 308 course that was taught by Professor Adrian Andrade covering similar topics of Spanish history. Both courses cover a wide variety of history of Spanish culture, even though Dr. Fernandez covers a larger part of the history of Latin America, where Professor Andrade takes a closer look at Aztec history. I intend to further explore what I learned in SPAN 306 by looking more into the history of Spanish in Latin America through examining various works such as poems and stories that I will most likely read out loud to keep on improving.
