SPAN 304 - Introduction to Hispanic Literature
Course Description - This course introduces the principles of literary analysis, based on reading and discussion of Hispanic literary texts. Includes fiction, drama, essay, and poetry from Spain and Spanish America. Taught in Spanish.
Reflective Narrative:
SPAN 304 was a major part of completing MLO 3. Throughout this course we review poems, short stories, essays, and other literary works in Spanish. Through these texts we are given a chance to look more into how people of the past wrote, and how that has influenced modern day Spanish literature. Close examination of these texts also served as a way of identifying what obscure statements mean that are particular to specific authors. Most of the work used as practice to pass this course was understating what the author was trying to convey through their work. We analyzed what the characters are doing, why they do it, and the overall purpose of their words and actions. We were given small quizzes to assess our understanding of these texts. Throughout this course, I have gained more insight as to how individuals interpret their own emotions or everyday actions. Why they do what they must do, either to announce to the world how they feel about certain topics or their everyday actions through the easiest or best method they know will help them get the message across. In order to complete this action I need to develop further in my writing skills. While writing is a major part of this program and course, I don’t feel as if I’ve grown in my writing style at all. I’ve noticed a good amount of incomplete sentences and somehow writing things that don’t make sense. Though not a lot of criticism is given, I feel it is necessary to improve my writing. Several of my other courses in my Spanish major program also go over different types of writing. Articles, books, movies, anything that conveys the Spanish language, not to completely understand the works that I may read in the future, but just to have a slight understanding of what it is we are reading. Being able to continue learning similar topics, I will have to rely on reading more Hispanic literature in general to get a better understanding of how people convey their emotions through their writings.
