In addition to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures, the student demonstrates a general knowledge of a socio-cultural group other than a Hispanic one or mainstream American culture. The student develops a basic understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions) and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) – of the second culture.
4.1 Students describe concepts of culture and use that understanding in their comparison of Hispanic cultures with a second culture other than those.
4.2 Students will analyze and make connections between the perspectives, ways of thinking, behavioral practices, and cultural products of a second culture other than Hispanic cultures.
4.2 Students will analyze and make connections between the perspectives, ways of thinking, behavioral practices, and cultural products of a second culture other than Hispanic cultures.
There are two pathways by which this outcome can be fulfilled:
- Pathway 1: The student completes at least one upper division course whose focus is a socio-cultural group not reflected by a Hispanic culture. General areas to choose from are: literature, the social sciences (anthropology, geography, history, political systems), art history, music history and/or the second cultural group.
- Pathway 2: The student may opt for a more individual pathway, choosing to independently study, research and analyze the working components of the second culture.
Reflective Narrative:
In order to fulfill this MLO, students will be required to take a course outside of their Spanish major that covers a separate culture other than a Hispanic culture. Through this course, students will work to develop an understanding of the philosophies and moral customs of a separate country or people.
The course I took to cover MLO 4 was JAPN 311: Social Issues in Japan. This course covered social issues that are currently occurring in Japan, stemming from previous and present issues. For JAPN 311 for my research paper I chose to write about, “Work Industry Inequality for Women in Japan” , where I talk about the staggering amount of women facing workplace discrimination in their jobs. Unfortunately, in Japan women are given less opportunities to be promoted, and a great disparity exists between their pay and men's pay. Often women are also forced to choose between their work or personal lives. I chose this work to represent this class as it was a topic I felt that has a lot of significance in regards to social inequalities in various societies. America has also faced these issues in the past, as well as in modern times, we can see how these issues impact the Hispanic community. Through this course, I was able to demonstrate my understanding of a different culture other than my own, and how certain practices in this culture may relate to issues people close to me may face in their work.
By viewing and researching workplace inequities of Japanese culture, it has made me reflect more deeply on the practices of my culture. I will use this MLO as a starting point to take into consideration what I can work towards in regards to social changes for my culture. As well as research my own topics and analyze the culture during my own time.
